Fontaine-de-Vaucluse

My favorite reminders in life are undoubtedly the ones from mother earth. In Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, a commune roughly 25 minutes from where I'm staying, she reminded me of the powers of water. The Sorgue river rushes through the small commune bringing life to the surrounding nature and human-created life simultaneously. Upon first view, I was struck by the beauty of the water's clarity, and I remembered again it's something I've grown to be unused to in my home country. Looking down at the river's bed, I watched the greenery flourish below the rush of water in a vibrant quality I'd never expected to see.

Moving along the river toward my final destination, I paused every so often to appreciate the energy the water provided. Ducks swam in calm areas and rested on rocks in the center of the stream as the water surged around them on all sides. It might've been true or maybe just the energy within the day, but even the ducks seemed more colorful than the ones that lived their lives without encountering the Sorgue.

As my hike veered away from the river's edge and upward, I glanced toward the sky revealing the stature of the surrounding cliffs. There was no longer an opportunity to view miles out into the distance. Instead, I absorbed the patterns within the stone and giggled at the singular tree atop the cliffs. It was as if I now lived underground and the tree above me was a part of the sky and clouds.

In reaching the top of the trail, I accepted the french warning of falling rocks and bypassed the wooden railing. A short descent to the bottom was where I'd been headed all along. The pool and cavern opening sat so excessively still that if someone had told me it was a painting, I would probably believe them. The water of the pool was bright blue, perfectly clear, and absolutely see-through all at once. In the first few moments, it was difficult to respond with many words other than wow; more than anything else there was silence. I stayed at the pool's edge for the rest of the available time during our visit. Even after leaving, I could feel the effort earth had put into the beauty of the space, and the energy of the water stayed with me until I fell asleep that night.
